West Ham flop snapped returning to training three months after tearing his ACL

Former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca has been pictured back in training with Serie A Atalanta just three months after the Italian forward tore his ACL

Just three months after tearing his ACL, former West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca has been pictured back in training with Atalanta.

Signed by the Hammers back in 2022 for an initial £35million, Scamacca lasted just a season with the Premier League side. A knee injury led to Scamacca getting surgery in April 2023, meaning he missed the remainder of the season, including West Ham’s Europa Conference League triumph.

A move back to Serie A to join Atalanta followed in the ensuing transfer window, with Scamacca scoring 19 goals in 44 appearances last term for the eventual Europa League winners. However, back in August, the 25-year-old suffered an ACL injury.

But despite the injury, which looked as though it would lead to Scamacca missing the majority of the season, he has been pictured at training with Atalanta.

The club’s official social media account on Instagram posted a photo of Scamacca sitting on top of a ball watching his teammates in action. They posted the photo attaching two eye emojis.

Back in September, Sky Sports Italia reported the Italian striker is recovering ahead of schedule and could even be in line for a return to action in early January.

And a return to action for Scamacca would likely be a huge boost for Atalanta, who sit just a point behind Antonio Conte’s Napoli in the Serie A table.Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have won eight of their opening 12 games this term in Serie A, with one of those wins seeing them run rampant against Napoli.

At the beginning of November, Atalanta travelled to Naples putting three goals past the current Serie A leaders to claim a 3-0 win.
