Unai Emery confirms Aston Villa transfer plan as Nottingham Forest and two foreign clubs in talks for defender

The Spanish defender is expected to depart Villa Park before the end of the transfer window as he’s now seen as surplus to requirements.

Birmingham World understands Nottingham Forest have made an approach but face competition from two clubs in Spain, and another in Turkey. The internal feeling at Villa, regretfully, is that there’s no longer a place for Moreno at the football club. The 31-year-old wasn’t included in the matchday squad at all for on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Emery confirmed post-match that the decision was influenced by ongoing transfer negotiations.

We signed Ian Maatsen and we were speaking with some different players in this position. At the beginning with Alex Moreno and Lucas Digne, we were trying to see how we could keep them in our structure, being strong. Alex Moreno is the player who is now close to leaving,” Emery confirmed.

Signed for £13.3 million from Real Betis in January 2023, Moreno has played 48 times for Villa in all competitions. The Spaniard was a regular during his first half-a-season in the Premier League but fell behind Lucas Digne in the pecking order for much of last campaign. As far as Villa are concerned, the focus is on Maatsen and Digne going forward, with Moreno no longer a suitable option. The decision is now in the player’s hands, with the experienced defender already receiving the four offers mentioned – and more clubs could still swoop.
