Everton’s transfer strategy has, thus far, been really intelligent.
They have sought to acquire a younger brand of player on smaller fees and manageable wages, with the plan being that if they succeed, they can command a huge sum for his services.

However, should they flatter to deceive, there will still be some sell-on value at least.
Every signing this summer has fit this mould, but this fresh report is now in direct contrast with that notion.
Everton are alone in their pursuit of Arthur Melo
The latest on Everton’s transfer pursuits comes courtesy of Italian outlet TuttoJuve, who are seeking to reaffirm interest in Juventus outcast Arthur Melo.
Having just returned from a fine loan spell with Fiorentina, his is a career somewhat revived and seeking a new step to solidify this newfound form.

It might be tempting for the Toffees, but the report actually reveals a worrying trend, as Sean Dyche is now alone as the 27-year-old’s only concrete transfer option.

Even if Arthur Melo wants to join Everton, this lack of competition is never a good sign.
So, it might be interesting to see whether they do proceed with a bid, or whether they pivot elsewhere and look to sign Kalvin Phillips instead.
Should Everton sign Kalvin Phillips or Arthur Melo?
Clearly seeking a replacement for Amadou Onana, who departed from Everton earlier this month, there is now a gaping vacancy in the defensive midfield spot that Dyche will want to fill.
And whilst Kevin Thelwell will likely want to continue with his current transfer strategy, aiming for younger, underappreciated talent, the former Burnley boss will likely want some more experienced legs in the engine room to place alongside the energy of James Garner or Idrissa Gana Gueye.
Both a couple of classy conductors, there are similarities between the two.
However, not only are there also outstanding differences, but the respective deals would be hugely different too.
Arthur Melo would only come in on a permanent deal, whilst Phillips would instead only be on a loan.

So, it depends whether Dyche first wants to opt for a little bit more class with the £103k-a-week Brazilian or a little more combat with the Englishman, and also whether he wants a permanent fix or just a one-year stopgap.
These are all really tough considerations that need ironing out before any big decisions are made at Everton.
