Celtic are reportedly chasing a deal for American midfielder Tanner Tessmann while Brendan Rodgers and his team are in the States.

Rebalancing the midfield is one of the big tasks facing Rodgers this summer with Matt O’Riley seeming increasingly likely to be on his way for big bucks. Talks are ongoing to bring Paulo Bernardo back to the club, while there could be more shifted on – with Hyeokkyu Kwon eyed for another loan to St Mirren and Tomoki Iwata another possible departure.

So far, new names in the engine room have been hard to come by – but the latest from Italy is Celtic are chasing highly-rated USA cap Tessmann. The 22-year-old was a standout for Venezia in Serie B last season and Gianluca Di Marzio claims the Hoops have joined Brentford, as well as Italy’s Torino, Parma and Como in the race for the midfielder.

What’s more is he has seemingly rejected a move to Inter with his agents ‘unable to find an agreement’ with the Serie A champions. A creative midfielder, Tessmann scored seven and assisted three as Venezia narrowly missed out on promotion last season. He previously ran out for FC Dallas and has two caps for his country having been one of their most highly-rated talents in his youth.

Celtic fans will be able to watch him at the Olympic Games this summer where he will captain a youthful American side in Paris. Before making a move to Parkhead? Quite possibly if Di Marzio is on the money.

Elsewhere it’s reported Rodgers personally spoken with Michel-Ange Balikwisha – who we understand is a firm target. Balikwisha has been linked with a move from Antwerp to Parkhead and the player’s manager admitted the speculation is making things tough for him to plan ahead.

Sacha Tavolierisays Rodgers has spoken with the wide man personally about a move. The 23-year-old is also being tracked by Rennes – with his agent thought to be personally pursuing the latter. He scored an impressive ten goals last season and now looks set to move on.

Any move however may hinge on clearing space in the squad with Balikwisha’s position especially bloated. Daizen Maeda, Luis Palma, Mikey Johnston, Nicolas Kuhn and Yang are among the wingers competing for minutes in pre-season and starting the season with six senior wingers seems a touch excessive, particularly with Rodgers expressing concerns about that area of the squad in the past.
