Rangers And Celtic Wanted To Sign Me On The Same Day But My Dad Chose Ibrox

Queen of the South legend Stephen Dobbie says testimonial was perfect Palmerston farewell - Daily Record

He is now dreaming of being successful in the dugout after hanging up his boots

NOT many players have the chance to choose between Glasgow’s big two.

But when you’re a diehard Rangers fan and they both try to sign you on the same day, there is only one option.

Ex-Rangers youngster Stephen Dobbie, now 41, came through the youth ranks at Ibrox after he made his dream of joining the Light Blues a reality when he was a youngster.

He failed to break into the first team and ended up leaving the club for more opportunities when he was 20 years old, but the striker will never forget his years training with the boyhood side.

However, he could have ended up going down a very different path in his teenage years had his father not turned down CELTIC the same day he agreed to join Rangers.

Dobbie told the Blackpool Gazette: “My grandad and my dad used to take me all of the time, and then I signed at U11 and went all the way through to the reserve team.

“I was at Hearts, and I was scouted by Celtic and Rangers on the same day.

“They both went up to my dad during a game, and he said yes to one and no to the other straight away, so it wasn’t even a conversation.

“We travelled the world, going to Australia, Bermuda, Chile. You get to see the types of things you’ll experience if you make it.

“Being a Rangers fan and representing them at different levels was obviously a dream for me.

“When I became a scholar there would always be one or two players that would help out with the first-team, and I was one of them. I was a boot boy, which I loved as well. I would travel and help the kit man.

“I was very proud of every minute I had at Ibrox.
