Coach Prime Scores Big with Transfer Portal Addition Tawfiq Byard
The Colorado Buffaloes continue to build momentum under head coach Deion Sanders, securing a key transfer portal commitment. According to Hayes Fawcett of On3.com, Coach Prime has landed former South Florida safety Tawfiq Byard. Byard, a breakout star with three years of eligibility remaining, brings experience and ambition to Boulder, stating his ultimate goal: “Time to win the Natty.”
A Star in the Making
Byard’s decision comes after a standout sophomore season at USF, where the 6-foot-1, 200-pound safety posted 54 tackles, two sacks, and an interception. His versatility and physicality make him an excellent fit for Colorado’s defense, which has been reshaping itself under defensive coordinator Rob Livingston. Byard highlighted his connection with Livingston, saying, “He’s an NFL guy who coached a lot of good safeties. We speak the same language.”
Recruiting Battle Won
Byard chose the Buffaloes over offers from LSU, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech, showcasing the pull of Sanders’ program. His visit to Boulder, where he met with Coach Prime and the staff, sealed the deal. “The staff Coach Prime hired makes you feel welcomed and loved,” Byard said. This welcoming atmosphere, coupled with Sanders’ reputation for elevating players, gives Colorado an edge in landing top talent.
Building for the Future
With three years of eligibility, Byard has the time to grow into a pivotal role for the Buffaloes. His arrival bolsters a defense looking to compete at the highest level in college football. Byard’s commitment aligns with the program’s ambitious goals under Sanders, whose leadership continues to draw talent from across the country.
