Hyeokkyu Kwon’s second loan spell away from Celtic and why it makes sense for all parties

Hyeokkyu Kwon left Celtic on loan yesterday for Hibernian in a deal that will see him look to establish himself as a regular starter at Easter Road.

 

The South Korea international Under-23 international spent the second half of last season at St Mirren, putting in some impressive displays under Stephen Robinson.

Unfortunately, a season-ending injury curtailed his involvement at the SMiSA Stadium. Nevertheless, Kwon is now in a position to protect David Gray’s defence at Hibernian, an area Celtic ruthlessly exposed last weekend on several occasions.

 

He will be ineligible to play against his parent club in the Premier Sports Cup this weekend. However, his addition to the ranks looks to be a smart piece of business from the Leith-based outfit.

 

For Celtic, his departure may also breed several benefits despite the fact he has never made a competitive first-team appearance for the Bhoys.

 

 

Hyeokkyu Kwon’s latest loan spell away from Celtic

First and foremost, Kwon’s departure allows the former Busan iPark man to play regularly at a critical career stage. Now 23 years of age, he isn’t going to develop at Celtic Park without minutes, that goes without saying.

 

In a way, a season-long loan acts as an audition for the future. Should he succeed, there may be a roadmap towards future involvement under Brendan Rodgers.

 

The Irishman has had no problem moving players on permanently this summer. Earlier this week, Bosun Lawal joined Sead Haksabanovic, Benjamin Siegrist, Hyeongyu Oh, and Joe Hart in the departure lounge.

Daniel Kelly is also set to join Millwall, vacating another slot in the engine room. Does a loan for Kwon suggest there could be room for him to fill that further down the line? It isn’t out of the question if he shows his mettle throughout a full Scottish Premiership campaign.

 

Furthermore, if that isn’t the case, his value is bound to increase on the market regardless due to frequent game time.

 

Rodgers has prioritized trimming the squad over the past year, but the real task is maximising the value of offloaded individuals. It is pointless to bring in players and sell them at a loss; you might as well set them up for a successful career elsewhere while accumulating a tidy sum for their services.

 

His loan exit is a relatively minor piece of news in the middle of a transfer window. However, it could be part of a wider strategical aim that can only bode well for Celtic.
