Writing for the Daily Record’s ‘Monday Jury’section (30 September), Gannon feels Philippe Clement’s side can see off the rest of the league but are not able to compete with their Old Firm rivals.
The Gers have won four straight games in all competitions since losing to Celtic on 1 September but remain five points adrift of the Bhoys and early season surprise package Aberdeen in the table.
As such, Gannon thinks the focus should be on building momentum not winning the title, writing: “Rangers should forget about the title race right now. It’s about continuing to build momentum and showing signs of progress.
“They can deal with everyone but they’ll need to find a way to deal with Celtic and that still looks some way off.”
In terms of results, Rangers have responded well to that humbling 3-0 defeat at Celtic Park but performances have not always been too pleasing on the eye.
Clement’s side overcame Hibernian 1-0 at Ibrox on Sunday (29 September) thanks to Tom Lawrence’s absolutely belting finish but Mykola Kukharevych fluffed his lines from 12 yards shortly before the break in what was a huge let-off for the hosts after John Souttar was pinged for handball. The thing is, whatever the thoughts of the performance, Rangers got the job done and, frankly, right now that is all that matters. Build results, build momentum, and just make sure Celtic are not too far out of sight. If you can do that then you never know. Right now, it is hard to say with any degree of confidence that Rangers can wrest the title away from their rivals but we are after all only just about to enter October, so giving up the ghost at this juncture feels a little premature.
