As quoted by BBC Sport, Everton boss Sean Dyche has given his verdict on the Toffees’ challenging summer so far. The English coach said, “it’s a tough market. There is only so much that we can do, so we are working very hard – I can assure everyone of that.” Dyche may well be certain that the club’s recruitment staff are working hard, but that’s no guarantee that they’ll prove successful.
Everton have done some business this summer. Ashley Young joined the club on a free transfer, and Arnaut Danjuma also arrived at Goodison Park. However, given the Merseyside outfit came so close to relegation last season, there is clearly much more to be done.
A lack goals was a huge problem for Everton last time out. Dyche is aware of this. The club missed out on key target El Bilal Toure recently, when the striker chose to move to Atalanta instead of Everton.
Everton certainly thought they stood a great chanceof bringing in Toure. Dyche has given his verdict on the club’s struggles to close deals: “there have been situations where we have been into where we thought we were going to get it over the line and we don’t – that’s the way it goes.”
Everton desperately need a boost
With Neal Maupay and Dominic Calvert-Lewin misfiring, Dyche will be desperate to bring a reliable goal-scorer to the club. He says, “a lack of goals is always a concern because you need to score to win games. We showed in the second half of the season that we needed to find different ways of scoring goals.”
The whole club is in need of a lift. Relegation scraps, poor managerial appointments, transfer market missteps, and a lack of goals all take a toll on a club and its fanbase. A marquee signing can restore hope and optimism.
Dyche will certainly be frustrated. If Everton aren’t able to significantly upgrade their squad this summer, he will be the one who ultimately pays with his job when results don’t improve. Pre-season performances have been far from spectacular, the need to add some cutting edge in the final third is obvious for all to see.
Prolific strikers don’t come cheap, but somehow Everton must find a way to become more clinical ahead of next season. It is a tough market, as Dyche put it himself, but it’s a tough market for everyone. Everton don’t need excuses, they need players, and hope.
