Celtic ‘agree personal terms’ with Arne Engels as Augsburg’s tricky stance on sale becomes clear

The Bhoys have been consistently linked with the Augsburg talent over the last couple of weeks. At the the weekend, Celtic were reported to have opened talks for his signature.

The situation is advancing quickly with the reigning Scottish champions moving quickly amidst Matt O’Riley’s imminent big-money move to Brighton.

Reports from Germany now indicate that the player has agreed to make the switch to Glasgow but Augsburg’s stance remains a potential roadblock.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Augsburg want to keep Engels in the current transfer window and would only be willing to do business at a high level

They value him between £8.5m and £12.7m in local currency. The high end of that could well push Celtic out of the running, although the club do have money to burn.

They value him between £8.5m and £12.7m in local currency. The high end of that could well push Celtic out of the running, although the club do have money to burn.

Encouragingly, it’s said that personal terms with the player’s representatives have already been agreed, with the German club informed of that fact.

The 20-year-old midfielder has only been at Augsburg for 18 months so it’s understandable that they want to keep him and develop his talents further. That could result in an even bigger sale down the line.

Despite his young age he has already made over 50 Bundesliga appearances, scoring three goals and assisting nine times.

Engels is exactly the kind of emerging player Celtic should be targeting. The fact he has a hunger to come to Glasgow and play under Brendan Rodgers is encouraging, too.

Twente are still looking for a replacement for Robin Propper who joined Rangers this summer and it seems they see Lagerbielke as the man to do just that.

The Dutch side had a successful season finishing third in the Eredivisie which put them into the qualifying stages of the Champions League.

However, they were eliminated 5-4 on aggregate by RB Salzburg and will now continue their European journey in

Brendan Rodgers looks set to allow Lagerbielke this summer after the Celtic boss confirmed that the Swede needs to go out and get first-team football.

Speaking in last week’s pre-match press conference, Rodgers said, “I think to be fair to Gustaf, to go and play would be important for him. He and I have spoken on this here.

“It’s been a difficult move for him but I have to say he’s been absolutely brilliant – every day in training.I recognise how difficult it has been for him at times not to be on the bench and to be training here as a small group on a Saturday morning

“He’s never once wavered from being the ultimate professional and for me, he deserves the chance to go and play. He’s not been in my plan to play but he’s been a great teammate and a real privilege to coach. He deserves an opportunity to go and play and we’ll see what that looks like.”

Despite lacking in first-team minutes, it’s clear Rodgers has a lot of respect for Lagerbielke. Unfortunately, the move to Celtic just hasn’t worked out and it looks like his time at the club is coming to an end.

Hopefully, the big Swede gets the move he needs this summer so that he can show why Celtic paid £3m for him but it does seem that even if he does do that, a future at Parkhead is not on the cards for the young defender.
