It is understood that St Gallen are also adding a sell-on clause into the deal.
Blick adds that the Whites are also offering Schmidt a “lucrative multi-year contract” in a bid to lure him from Switzerland to the Championship. On Thursday night, Schmidt scored in his side’s 1-1 draw away against Trabzonspor in Turkey. He was substituted off after 61 minutes but his teammates went on to win the penalty shoot-out and qualify for the group stages of the Europa Conference League.
That, coupled with this multi-million deal from Leeds, means the Swiss side will receive a very good amount of money with the Lausanne-born full-back playing a vital role in both boosts.
All in all, St Gallen are getting £7.1million from Schmidt’s goal and his transfer to Leeds – if they receive all the bonus payments. Those bonuses could be related to how many times Schmidt plays for Leeds. He’s not expected to be a starter with Jayden Bogle and Junior Firpo the two starting full-backs for Leeds. However, Schmidt is versatile and can play on either side of the defence so if there are any injuries or serious loss of form, he can fill in.
There could also be some money paid to St Gallen if Leeds get promoted.
Everyone at Elland Road will be hoping that’s the case.
