Newcastle target Jonathan David discusses January transfer and names ‘dream’ club he wants to join
Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a move for Jonathan David in 2025.
Jonathan David will be available for free next summer when his Lille contract expires, and Newcastle United are one of many clubs who will compete for his signature.
A striker is not Newcastle’s top priority, but with Callum Wilson linked with a Newcastle exit, Eddie Howe will soon need competition for Alexander Isak.
It has been reported that Newcastle have already made contact about signing David and in September Newcastle were considered favourites to sign David.
However, Jonathan David has continued his incredible form with 13 goals in 19 appearances so far this season so the list of clubs showing an interest has continued to grow.
Jonathan David discusses January exit amid Newcastle rumours
Newcastle will have to beat a host of top European clubs if they plan on signing David, who is demanding a salary of just under £100,000 per week.
David will become a free agent in the summer, but he could still leave Lille in January if the French club receive a suitable offer.
The 24-year-old forward has now spoken about his future and shared his thoughts on moving to a new club in January.
Speaking to The Athletic, David said: “Going to a club midseason is never easy.
“It’s not like the beginning of a season where you have a pre-season, you get to know your team-mates, you have time to gel. In January, things are very hectic. It’s about right now. It’s tougher.”
That doesn’t exactly rule out a January move, but it does suggest that David would prefer to move in the summer if possible. That is great news for Newcastle, who may have struggled to match bids for the Canadian striker while they continue to struggle with PSR.
Jonathan David names his ‘dream’ transfer
Further in the interview, David named the club he would love to play for – and sadly he didn’t mutter the words: Newcastle United.
