Oxford United have agreed to sign Leicester City defender Ben Nelson on loan
A host of Championship clubs, including Sunderland, Bristol City, and Portsmouth have been chasing Nelson’s signature, but Oxford are poised to agree a deal for the highly-rated centre-back.
The 20-year-old is highly-regarded at Leicester, but with his first-team opportunities set to be limited in the Premier League this season, they feel a loan move to the Championship is the next stage in his development.
Leicester are also bracing themselves for offers from Championship clubs for forward Tom Cannon.Nelson was sent on a six-month loan to Rochdale back in 2022 to earn valuable first-team experience, making 12 appearances during his time at the club.He was then shipped out to Doncaster Rovers for the second half of the season where he went on to play 15 times, all of which were starts.The young defender broke into Leicester’s first team last season as they earned promotion back to the Premier League, but with Jannik Vestergaard, Conor Coady, and Wout Faes ahead of him, the club has agreed to a loan.Oxford United earned promotion to the Championship for the first time in 25 years by beating ex-Premier League side Bolton Wanderers 2-0 in the League One play-off final.
