Jarrad Branthwaite: Keith Wyness drops verdict on Man United move

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Jarrad Branthwaite could be “tempted” to stay at the club once the new stadium is open and the club is taken over.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Toffees still don’t need to sell the centre-back this summer despite their Friedkin Group takeover collapsing.

It was widely reported that Everton rejected a second bid from Man United for Branthwaite last month as the offer came nowhere near their valuation.

Football Insider revealed (2 July) that United are unwilling to meet the club’s £70million asking price for the England international.

The latest from a senior source today is that Everton are increasingly confident of keeping hold of their star defender and they will not budge on their asking price.

Branthwaite recently made his England debut and was ever-present in Sean Dyche’s side last term.

“We’ll be able to get through all the PSR requirements without selling Branthwaite.

“It’s just a question now of a normal transfer – does the player want to go, or is he happy to stay for another season?

“Man United are one of the sides testing the market, that’s for sure.

“But let’s hope he can see sense and stay another season.

“Then, of course, once that new stadium opens and a new ownership team come in – it could be very tempting for him to stay.

“He could see himself as being part of something really quite special.

“If not, we’ve got Jake O’Brien in who could be his replacement – and he’s started very well.
