Henning Berg still raging at Celtic nightmare 10 years on as former Rangers star snubs Murrayfield because it hurts.
Henning Berg’s old sides square off in a glamour friendly at Murrayfield on Saturday.
But the 54-year-old former Rangers and Manchester United stopper has no intention of making his way to the home of Scottish rugby – now or ever again. The former Legia Warsaw boss’ only previous visit to the Edinburgh stadium came back in 2014 when his Polish outfit rounded off a 6-1 aggregate Champions League hammering of Ronnie Deila’s sorry Celtic. But their Murrayfield mauling counted for nothing when they were booted out of the competition after fielding suspended defender Bartosz Bereszynski for the final 10 minutes of the second leg.
And a decade on, Berg is still seething over UEFA’s decision to disqualify his side and reinstate the Hoops. He said: “It was a big administrative mistake. We had a guy who was not registered. He played only eight minutes of the tie when we were 6-1 up.
“We had totally killed Celtic and for sure we should have gone through. If they had given us a big fine, that would for sure have been the right punishment. But to kick us out was simply unbelievable.
“That is something which will live in the memory of Legia for a long, long time. We are still not happy about it all these years after. The way Celtic went through was not the way to do it. It was not how they should behave.
“We absolutely killed them. It was one of the biggest nights for Legia Warsaw and for it to end like that was not correct. I haven’t been back to Murrayfield since then and I have no plans to go either. It’s something of a sore point.”
